The important difference between coaching and mentoring

Share

Key Takeaways

Question: What is coaching and what is mentoring? What is the difference and why is it mixed?

Answer: These two terms are very new and tend to confuse people. There is a very thin line between them.

The first definition of coaching came out in 2007: “coaching is a professional relationship between a coach and the coach, and is there to support the person's development and make sure that the person becomes better.”

A coach is there for you to give feedback, ask questions, and support. The relationship between coach and coachee is more equal.

Coaching is focused on asking the right questions and helping to find the answer. The different kinds of coaches (business etc.) are simply just working with different groups of people, but it doesn’t make them a specialist in, for example, business coaching.

On the other hand, a mentor is someone who has the expertise, and answers out of the experience. They say “this is how I did it”, not “this is the truth”.

They are usually more experienced and they already know what you are just going to learn with their help. They know tips and tricks.

“The coach simply tries to bring a bit of the hot air balloon perspective to support you, zoom out and look at yourself while you are doing it.”
