How to train new leaders

Share

Key Takeaways

Q: Why do newly promoted leaders need management skills?

A: If we don't teach them leadership skills people get dissatisfied with their work and experienced burnout, which is even worse. The effects are nasty, so a better and easier solution is to teach leadership skills.

Q: What are the core skills new leaders should be focusing on mastering?

A: To be effective, every new leader must learn coaching skills, like how to ask questions, how to give and receive feedback, how to lead difficult conversations and self leadership (resilience).

Q: How would a companies in different stages teach those skills?

A: I recommend starting with eLearning from vendors and external trainers. In larger companies, it's a great idea to set up a peer-to-peer leadership development program where senior leaders teach new leaders.

Q: How long does it take to go from newly hired to highly competent leader? What's the fastest way to do it?

A: There's no right answer to this because it depends on the personality of the individual.

The fastest way to train leaders is to make the training tailored to them. It's also important to dividing the knowledge into smaller portions vs. learning everything all in a single day. These small portions help with knowledge retention and builds confidence.

Q: What are the benefits from training new leaders?

A: : Job satisfaction for the new leader and their team! This in turn positively impacts turnover.

Q: What triggers the need for mentoring or coaching?

A: Usually the need is triggered by a 360 feedback session because then you can find the place for improvement.
